[Tutorial] A Guide to JE Shopping (official & unofficial)

May 10th, 2008

THIS TUTORIAL WAS ALL BY ME :D
I don’t think there is a need to re-post this tutorial because I don’t guarantee it being 100%. Also, things change and update all the time and I prefer updating here, on my blog :)

So, here you will find Steph’s way of getting fangirly hands on hot JE goods :P Photos are included! By all means, show them to your friends if you think they’re helpful but PLEASE do not claim that you took them. I risked my poor fangirl life to take those photos ;-;

Hmm let’s start shall we?

JOHNNY’S SHOP
There are 5 (FIVE) shops throughout the whole of Japan: Tokyo (Harajuku), Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Fukuoka. I believe all the shops would sell the same things though some products may be sold out in one shop and not the other. But please don’t send hatemails to me if the stores don’t sell exactly the same things because I only go to the Harajuku store D:

Since I have only (well I always spend most of my time in Tokyo so XD;) been to the Harajuku store, my “tutorial” is all about going to the Harajuku store so sorry for not being able to answer questions on the other stores ;-;

So here you go, last but not least…the HARAJUKU, TOKYO STORE :DDD <3

Basic info about the Harajuku (原宿 @ Tokyo) store:
● Opening hours: 10:00am~7:00pm
● Address: 〒150-0001 渋谷区神宮前1-14-21 イルサリチェビル1F

This is the only store in Tokyo. The shop is not big, there’s only 2 floors. The basement is full of photos and the ground floor is where all the other goods are (and some photos). You might be able to buy leftover concert goods here…and during the tour times you MAY find the concert goods on sale there too.

First you have to get yourself to Harajuku. I recommend taking the train (JR) or the Tokyo Metro.

If you take the Japan Rail (JR), get to Harajuku Station (原宿駅) and exit through “表参道口改札” as this is the closes exit to the JE shop. You should see the Snoopy Shop right in front, accross the road. The other exit isn’t really that far away so it doesn’t matter if you make a mistake (If you get out of the other exit, you should see Takeshita Street - 竹下通). No worries, just keep walking uphill until you see the Snoopy Shop and follow the rest of this tutorial (rofl).

If you get out of the right exit, the exit should look like this on the outside:

Cross the street to where Snoopy Town (it’s a shop) is. Turn right -as in if you’re facing the Snoopy shop, turn to your right- and keep walking…round the corner you should see a park/square. There should be a flight of stairs that leads to a bridge which crosses the big crossroad, telephone booths, people smoking (it’s the smoking area lol) and lots of people sitting around. across the pedestrian street (aka. a mini street lol XD) should be a shop called “PLAY HOUSE” and a cafe with a panda as the logo (it seems to me like a crepe-ish shop lol).

^ Something like this :D But please don’t expect it to have so little people like in this photo. This is what it looks like before noon.

If you take the Tokyo Metro, get to Meiji-jingumae Station (明治神宮前駅). You can get directly to that park/square place! Since i’ve never taken the metro there, I don’t know which exact exit is this so gomen.

Now your REAL journey begins!

OPTIONAL step for people who don’t see any queue at the square: Go to the shop to see if you’re allowed in. If you go in the early early morning or when they are about to close, you might find that you won’t have to queue to get in. (I tried that once -__-;;) If you’re allowed in, congratulations the steps below does not apply for you. If you fail, go back to that park/square next to PLAY HOUSE.

The shop is actually located in the alley between PLAY HOUSE and the panda cafe (LOL - it’s my name for it).

This is what the alley looks like. It doesn’t look like where the JE shop should be located right? But no worries…people carrying the Johnny’s Shop yellow bag will give you confidence XD;

You see that pink thing? That’s where the Johnny’s shop is. (We’re getting closer 8D)

This is what the Johnny’s Shop @ Harajuku looks like from the outside. There is a fence around it and some staff standing outside guarding the entrance. If you’re not allowed in, they’d tell you to go back to the square/park.

So for those unlucky people who find out that they need to queue…

Step 1: Walk around the square/park and find one of the shop staff. They should be wearing a white t-shirt with “Johnny’s” printed in red on the back or in the winter, the might be wearing this big black coat with “Johnny’s” printed in white on the back. The shop staff may be male/female so you really gotta look for the company uniform lol. They might change from year to year, I’m not sure. Just look for “JOHNNY’S” printed anything XD

Step 2: Ask for a ticket - use Japanese/English/Sign-language (rofl). They tend to know a minimal amount of English so speak slowly :D The ticket tends to be yellow, with a box that contains a time printed on it in bold. It should also tell you to come back to the square/park/waiting place at the time printed on the ticket. If the all the tickets are gone, they might ask you to stand there waiting (you might have to stand there for a hour if you don’t have a ticket - it’s not nice, i tried D:). Sometimes if it’s too close to closing time and the shop is still congested, they’ll tell you to come back another day.

Step 3: Return to the place which you got the ticket AT THE TIME PRINTED ON THE TICKET. There you’ll have to queue with all the people with the same type of ticket with you. The shop staff will then give you information on what to do. They’d probably say a long speech which basically summarizes to “Thanks for waiting! Please follow me, single-file, to the store. As the store is full of people, please visit the basement first -where most of the photos are- before the ground floor -with the other goods & cashier”.

^ This is what it looks like when you’re queuing with fellow fangirls/fanwomen.

Step 4: Once you pass through the entrance, hand the staff your ticket.

Step 5: Depending on how congested the place is, they’d probably tell you to go the to basement first which is where most of the photos are. (Personally I suggest this route too since there’s nothing wrong to look at photos even if you’re not buying them 8D).

Step 6: There should be forms & pens around: grab one of each. If you’re planning to buy photos of different groups (i.e. NewS and KAT-TUN), I suggest you get a form for each group. At the top of the form, there should be boxes with all the group names. So if i’m buying photos for NewS and KAT-TUN, I would tick the box for KAT-TUN on one form and NewS in the other. Then browse around for the photos you want. Once you found one that you want, find the number of the photo on your form and write down the quantity in the box next to the photo number (there should be a different number for each photo). So for example, I want to buy a photo of Akanishi Jin and the number for it is “891″, I would find the box for photo “891″ on my form for KAT-TUN photos and write a number “1″ next to it because I only want one copy. Once you’re done with the basement go back up to the ground floor. However, during peak hours, you may have to queue until the staff tells you that you’re allowed up.

Step 7: Go up to the ground floor. This floor is where the cashier and other goods are. Shop goods (goods that you can only get from the shop) are located on the shelves on the right. On the other 2 walls are photos of Johnny’s Jr. or other photos (i.e. SMAP, old photos). You may also find leftover concert goods (i.e. Uchiwas) hanging on the ceiling around the ground floor of the shop - you will have to ask for these at the cashier. When you’re done with shopping here, queue to get to the cashier (it may take 45 minutes hour during peak hours).

^ I got bored from lining up for the cashier so I decided to risk my life and take a photo of the Johnny’s Shop - Harajuku Branch- floor. It’s got a blue & white checkered floor :D (ROFL)

Here’s a few tips & extras that I recommend reading, no matter which shop you go to:

  • BRING ALOT OF CASH - they don’t accept credit card D: <— I READ IN SOME BOOKS THAT THEY ACCEPT CREDIT CARD NOW, BUT I HAVEN’T TRIED (I TRIED IN 2005 AND THEY DIDN’T) RECENTLY SO I STILL RECOMMEND YOU BRINGING SOME CASH.
  • You can’t take photos inside - please follow this rule because it’s called polite to do so. (I took photos and risked my life to spread the love and to promote JE business - DON’T FOLLOW ME XD *bad example*)
  • You cannot eat either - if you get yucky food all over my JE boys I will help the staff kill you too >:D lol
  • If you’re buying uchiwa (fans) and posters, or any other goods that have samples stuck on walls and ceiling etc., you have to ask for them once you get to the cashier. Let’s say you want to buy an “Akanishi Jin Uchiwa” you don’t say “Jin Uchiwa ONE!” because I said that once and the girl repeated what I said, but in the correct and polite way which was “Akanishi-kun Uchiwa, hitotsu (one) onegaishimasu”. Or something along those lines because I suck in nihongo and I don’t want to mislead anyone.

Prices of Official Goods

** THIS IS FOR YOUR GENERAL IDEA **
- Photos –> ALL 150yen. There is no discount if you buy more.
- Shop version, small plastic uchiwa –> 500yen
- (Jumbo-size) Concert Uchiwa –> 500yen
Errr I forgot the price for the other goods XD; Shall add more if I find anymore receipts lying around :P

That’s pretty much it for the official shops. Happy shopping ^_________^;

BUYING JE GOODS IN OTHER SHOPS
There are many unofficial shops. When I was in Osaka once, I walked around the streets and I found them just lying around in some random street. So to be honest, it’s…quite random where they are.

However in Tokyo, I recommend 竹下通 (Takeshita Dori/ Takeshita Street). This is because all the shops are very concentrated.
If you’re taking the Japan Rail (JR), exit through Takeshita Dori exit. You’ll see it right in front of you once you get out of the station.

^ When I went there recently, they were advertising “Ushi ni Negai wo: Love & Farm”, the J-drama starring Tamayama Tetsuji (OMG HOT *O*) & Toda Erika etc., as you can see from the banner haha.

Unofficial goods shops are everywhere…especially photo stores. It’s not hard to find them as they have sandwich boards or big signs outside with all the celeb photos. Just walk in and its okay. There are also shops selling jewellry that celebrities wear. I got my Jin necklaces and Kame necklaces for about 640yen each.

However, there’s this ONE store which I really like visiting even if I don’t buy anything (rofl). You have to walk quite a while there…it’s on the 2nd floor, above a bra shop (lol). It’s quite ear-catching cause they have 3 TVs hanging from the outside playing concert DVDs. When I first noticed this shop, they were playing KAT-TUN’s Kaizoukuban Concert XDDDD;

^ I took this photo back in 2005 with my crappy phone camera.

This shop sells Japanese artist goods. They have stuff for JE/wFL/Hello Project. This includes limited edition stuff/concert tickets/super uber rare promotion goods/celeb jewellry/unofficial photos etc.

^ I got this one from this shop, but this is NOT the only shop which sells it. I just like getting it from this shop cause the shop is neater lol.

^ 72000yen. I can’t believe it. I wish I was as rich as Bill Gates ;-; (totally hoshiiiii~~~~~ <33333)

I saw Akanishi Jin’s signature board from LooKing 05 Yokohama Arena Con there once.

^ Here’s a photo of it. I took it with my crappy phone’s crappy camera back in 2005. This is why the quality is so bad but as you can see, the price of it was UNBELIEVABLE: 90000yen!!!!! I wonder who bought it D:

Umm yes, happy shopping in Harajuku. Hope your wallet will not be emptied by the time you finish XD;
